Ask-a-Doc: What Kind of Anesthesia Will I Be Given During My Surgery?
Discover the perfect anesthesia for your surgery. Learn about your options, from general to nerve blocks, from Dr. Keith Berend at JIS Orthopedics.
Hello, I’m Dr. Derek Snook.
In the case of an injection, the whole idea is to lessen pain by relieving inflammation. That’s the way in which a steroid injection works.
There are some other injections that can be done on the spine as well that work slightly differently. But in all cases, we’re looking at trying to relieve pain and not necessarily reconstruct the spine.
Similar desires exist with surgery but can be more definitive in terms of addressing the actual underlying condition. For example, in this case, most of the time, it’s neurologic compression, whether it’s from a disc or an arthritic bone spur, etc.
