Hello, I’m Dr. David Crawford

What is hip preservation surgery? Well, when we say that, we really mean arthroscopic surgery of the hip.

We’re using small cameras and instruments to go in and treat damage in the hip joint. This is done in situations when you do not have hip arthritis. That is not a situation when this type of surgery would be beneficial.

It’s actually relatively new in the realm of orthopedics and has been around for about the past 20 years. So we use small cameras and instruments through a few small incisions and go in and repair the damage, such as a labral tear and/or reshaping of the hip bone.

In some folks, there’s an abnormality of the ball or socket where we need to prevent hip impingement from occurring. The surgery is typically an outpatient surgery and takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Recovery depends on what needs to be done at the time of surgery, but in general, it is about 6 to 12 weeks.

Ultimately, the goal is to get you back to doing the things that you were doing prior to your injury so you can return to the sports that you desire.
