Most of the incisions are closed these days with sutures underneath the skin that absorb, and then a skin adhesive on top that seals the wound in the sterile environment of the operating room. 

However, we often have to use those stainless steel staples on the skin for more complicated wound closures or revision surgeries because they’re a little bit more robust. They have to be taken out at three weeks post-operatively. 

In addition, there is another closure called a zip line closure. This is also frequently used for complicated closures, and it is usually taken off by the patient about two weeks after surgery.
