Ask-a-Doc: What’s the Difference Between Partial and Total Knee Replacement?

Hello, I’m Dr. Michael Morris.
One of the things that we found with doing inpatient hospitalizations—one of the biggest complaints was how long it takes to receive pain medications when it’s time for their pain medicine. Even on schedule, they call the nurse, and the nurse is busy with 3, 4, or 5 patients, and it could be a half hour or 45 minutes.
With them at home, they get to take the medicine when they need to, which is certainly a big advantage. So, we’ve learned a lot of things over the years that are necessary to deliver outstanding, safe care for patients.
Hospitals have also shown to have higher complication rates than an outpatient center just by the sheer number of people that they see and other conditions they see. So risks of infection tend to be higher in a hospital than they do in an outpatient setting. So, there are lots of benefits from outpatient arthroplasty.
