What Our Patients Say

“I am beyond grateful for this practice. My surgery for knee replacement was in July. Since then I’ve had the absolute most respect for the care and concern of this office. Just yesterday I was seen by Amy, nurse practitioner. Her genuine care and concern for my other knee went above and beyond. I would highly recommend for your orthopedic needs.” — Tracy M.

Hearing a popping sound every time you bend, climb stairs, or get up from a chair can be unnerving. While occasional knee popping isn’t always a cause for concern, frequent popping or a popping sensation accompanied by pain could indicate an underlying issue in the knee joint.

At JIS Orthopedics, our experienced orthopedic surgeons in New Albany and St. Clairsville, Ohio, diagnose and treat all types of knee problems. If you’re worried about a popping noise in your knee or are experiencing difficulty moving your affected leg, contact us today for a thorough physical examination.

Common Conditions That May Cause Popping Knees

Not all knee popping is serious. Sometimes, a popping or cracking sound occurs when tiny bubbles in the synovial fluid burst as the knee moves. This is similar to what happens when you crack your knuckles. But other times, the popping sound coming from your knee may signal one of the following:

  • Meniscus tear: The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in your knee joint. A torn meniscus can create a locking sensation, sharp pain, and a grinding sensation when your knee bends.
  • Ligament injuries: Damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament, or other ligament tears from a knee injury or playing sports can cause instability and cause popping sounds in the joint.
  • Patellar femoral syndrome (runner’s knee): Misalignment of the patellar tendon can result in a popping noise or cracking sounds during knee flexion or when climbing stairs.
  • Knee osteoarthritis: Cartilage wear causes knee crepitus, where popping or cracking sounds mix with stiffness and knee pain.
  • Patellar tendon tear: Severe patellar tendon injuries or patellofemoral stress syndrome may lead to significant pain and may even require surgery.

What Can You Do for Knee Popping?

If your popping knee isn’t accompanied by pain, you may not need immediate treatment. Gentle stretching, maintaining a healthy weight, and low-impact exercises like swimming or cycling can encourage smooth movement of the joint.

If you feel pain, swelling, or difficulty moving after an intense workout, deep knee bend, or injury, you should rest and apply ice. A physical therapist can design exercises to improve the range of motion and stabilize the knee structure.

When to See an Orthopedic Surgeon

A popping sensation after a long run might be harmless. But you should seek medical attention if you have immediate pain after injury or a locking sensation in the knee joint.

Signs you should see an orthopedic surgeon include:

  • Severe tears, like an ACL tear or major cartilage injury
  • Swelling that doesn’t go away
  • Difficulty moving or inability to straighten the knee
  • Grinding sensation or causing pain with every step

Early diagnosis and treatment by skilled knee specialists can protect healthy knees and help prevent long-term complications.

Treatment for Knee Popping

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Some people benefit from physical therapy to correct movement patterns and improve range of motion. Others may need:

  • Medications for inflammation and knee pain relief
  • Bracing is used to stabilize the knee joint after ligament injuries
  • Injections to reduce swelling and aid healing
  • Surgical interventions for severe tears, including meniscal tears, ACL tears, or patellar tendon tears

An experienced orthopedic surgeon will perform a physical examination and recommend the best approach. Sometimes surgery is necessary, but often, non-invasive care is effective.

Knee Popping Prevention Tips

While some cracking sounds in the knee are unavoidable, you can lower the risk of knee problems by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce stress on the knee joint
  • Warming up before intense workouts and playing sports
  • Avoiding repetitive deep knee movements that strain the patellar tendon
  • Building strength in your thigh and hip muscles to support smooth movement
  • Seeking medical attention for injuries right away to prevent further ligament tears or cartilage injury
