What Our Patients Say

“I recently had carpal tunnel release surgery. I’d never had surgery before, not a fan of doctors and needles, so I was nervous to say the least. Any time I contacted their office, the team was responsive and professional, and the procedure was fairly quick and easy. Recovery takes time, but soon after surgery I noticed that the carpal tunnel symptoms in that hand were gone. I’m preparing to return for surgery on the other hand and feel confident that I chose the right doctor for the job.” — Dorian W.

What is De Quervain's Tenosynovitis?

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition where the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist become inflamed, irritated, or constricted as they pass through a narrow tunnel called the tendon sheath. This inflammation causes pain, swelling, and difficulty with certain wrist movements, such as gripping or pinching.

Sometimes referred to as de Quervain’s disease or de Quervain’s syndrome, this condition can affect anyone, but it is most common in individuals who perform repetitive hand and wrist motions.

What Causes De Quervain's Tenosynovitis?

The primary cause of de Quervain’s tenosynovitis is repetitive movements of the thumb and wrist. Activities that require frequent pinching, grasping, or twisting motions — such as lifting a child, playing a musical instrument, or using a smartphone — can irritate the tendons and cause them to swell. This swelling narrows the tendon sheath, increasing pressure on the tendons and causing pain.

What Are the Risk Factors?

Certain factors increase your risk of developing de Quervain’s syndrome, including:

  • Repetitive hand and wrist movements such as gripping, pinching, and lifting.
  • Jobs or hobbies that require frequent use of the hands, including musicians, manual laborers, and athletes.
  • De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is more common in adults aged 40-50 and women
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy and caring for an infant can increase strain on the wrist.

What Are the Symptoms of De Quervain's Tenosynovitis?

The most common symptoms of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis symptoms include:

  • Pain on the thumb side of the wrist (can radiate up the forearm)
  • Swelling near the base of the thumb
  • Limited movement when pinching, gripping, or twisting the wrist
  • A “sticking” sensation when moving the thumb
  • Pain that worsens with repetitive use

If you feel pain on the thumb side of your wrist, seeking care is essential. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the condition from worsening.

How is De Quervain's Tenosynovitis Diagnosed?

A diagnosis of quervain’s tenosynovitis typically begins with a physical exam. Your doctor will check for tenderness, swelling, and range of motion. One common diagnostic tool is the Finkelstein test, where you make a fist with your fingers wrapped around your thumb, then tilt your wrist downward. If this movement causes pain, it may indicate de Quervain’s tendinitis.

In some cases, doctors may order imaging tests, such as X-rays, to rule out other conditions like fractures or arthritis.

How is De Quervain's Tenosynovitis Treated?

Treatment for de Quervain’s tenosynovitis depends on the severity of symptoms. Options may include:

  • Rest and activity modification — Avoid repetitive movements that worsen symptoms.
  • Wrist splinting — Immobilizing the wrist and thumb to reduce strain.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications — Reducing swelling and easing pain.
  • Corticosteroid injections — Relieve inflammation in the tendon sheath.
  • Physical therapy — A physical therapist can teach de Quervain’s tenosynovitis exercises to restore strength, flexibility, and function.
  • Surgery — In severe cases, De Quervain’s release surgery may be necessary to release the constricted tendon sheath.

At JIS Orthopedics, we provide both non-surgical and surgical treatments for de Quervain’s disease. Our orthopedic specialists will create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.

Can De Quervain's Tenosynovitis Be Prevented?

While it’s not always possible to prevent de Quervain’s tenosynovitis, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk:

  • Avoid repetitive thumb and wrist movements — Use proper ergonomic techniques.
  • Take breaks — If your job or hobby requires frequent use of the hands, take regular breaks.
  • Practice proper posture and positioning — Avoid awkward wrist positions.
  • Strengthen hand and wrist muscles — Regular de Quervain’s tenosynovitis exercises can help prevent flare-ups.

If you’re at high risk, consult with a specialist at JIS Orthopedics to learn how to modify activities and reduce strain on your wrists.

Recovery from De Quervain's Tenosynovitis

Recovery from de Quervain’s tenosynovitis varies based on the severity of the condition and the type of treatment received. For mild cases, resting the wrist and using anti-inflammatory treatments may bring relief within a few weeks. More severe cases may require physical therapy or surgery, with recovery times ranging from a few weeks to a few months.

The experts at JIS Orthopedics will guide you through the recovery process, helping you regain wrist strength and range of motion. By following your treatment plan and practicing preventive measures, you can reduce the risk of recurrence.
