Ask-a-Doc: What Happens After My Surgery?
Understanding post-op care is crucial after surgery. Learn what happens next from Dr. Jason Hurst at JIS Orthopedics in New Albany and St. Clairsville, OH.
Hello, I’m Dr. Jason Hurst from JIS Orthopedics.
For our patients, therapy typically starts on the day of surgery. We’re very aggressive with getting our patients up within 2 to 3 hours after surgery.Â
We expect almost all of our patients to undergo physical therapy with an outpatient physical therapy clinic, which typically starts within 48 hours of departure from the surgery center or the hospital.Â
For knee replacements and hip replacements, physical therapy typically lasts about 6 weeks. For shoulder replacements, it’s typically about 10 to 12 weeks of physical therapy. That also includes shoulder repairs, like rotator cuff repairs or labral repairs.
