Hello, I’m Dr. Derek Snook.
The chances of improvement after back surgery, whether it’s a herniated disc operation or a fusion operation for stenosis and instability, are generally quite good. There’s probably an 80 to 85% chance that you will be better in terms of having less pain, improving your functional abilities, as well as improving your quality of life.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the rest of the people are all worse, but there are a number of people who may say, “I’m slightly better, but not better enough that I would go through the same operation for the same result.”
And there are even rare occasions when someone could be worse after surgery, whether it’s from a known complication or, in some cases, idiopathic reasons.
